Developing the life skills and attributes employers want
All pupils at Garth Hill College have the opportunity to embark on an innovative life skills programme called ‘The Edge’.
The scheme is intended, over time, to develop and accredit the life skills and attributes that employers are telling us they need – leadership, organisation, initiative, resilience and communication. This will give pupils a qualification, which runs alongside their academic successes and recognises what they can do as well as what they know.
In order to gain the qualification at “Apprentice”, “Graduate” or “Masters” level, pupils need to complete a range of activities. The activities can be many and varied and can be undertaken in normal lessons, in extra-curricular clubs or outside of college.
Progress on the scheme will be managed by pupils themselves using a specially designed on-line app, with tutors and enrichment staff providing guidance and oversight towards achieving the qualification.
We believe that ‘The Edge’ provides real life opportunities for the pupils of Garth Hill College to excel in their future as they apply to colleges, universities and for positions of employment.
Each year, our Sixth Form students have the opportunity to apply for 3-4 prestigious internships to enhance their Edge portfolio. The internships are more than work experience with students managing real projects with measurable results at local organisations both public and private sector.
