Garth Hill at Mock COP 30 – A Voice for Climate Action

On Tuesday 30 September, a group of Garth Hill students had the exciting opportunity to attend a Mock COP 30 event at Wellington College. Sixteen countries were represented by delegates from local schools, each given just one minute to present their country’s stance on climate change and the impact it is having on their population and environment. Delegates also had to explain what actions their countries are taking to improve the global situation.

Garth Hill proudly represented Australia, with our pupils opening the summit with a powerful speech highlighting the devastating effects of wildfires and the steps Australia is taking to combat climate change. During the Q&A session, our delegates were challenged on Australia's continued investment in fossil fuels while seeking international support to reduce emissions. Our team handled the scrutiny impressively, responding with well-researched statistics and clear arguments prepared in record time.

The final task of the day involved collaboration — delegates explored how working together across nations can lead to greater progress in reducing emissions and addressing the wider consequences of climate change.

To ensure that students' voices are heard on a global scale, Wellington College is compiling a ‘Wellington Resolution’, incorporating the key ideas shared during the summit. This document will be sent to the official COP 30 conference in Brazil for review.

Look out for COP 30 updates in the news from 10 November onwards!
