GH6 Student Celebrates Outstanding Achievement with Oxford Offer

A Garth Hill College Sixth Form student is celebrating an outstanding academic achievement after securing an offer to study at the University of Oxford.

Arina Zarubina has achieved an exceptional set of grades – A A A* A A** – reflecting her dedication, academic ambition and commitment to her studies throughout her time at Garth Hill College.

Arina’s success is particularly notable given her wider academic achievements and passion for science. In 2026, she represented Garth Hill College in the prestigious UK Chemistry Olympiad, achieving a Silver Award and placing her among a select group of students recognised nationally for their ability to tackle challenging problems beyond the A Level specification.

Her passion for science extends beyond the classroom. In 2023, Arina was recognised nationally as a finalist in the Association of British Science Writers’ Young Science Writer Award, following her thought-provoking essay exploring whether humanity could one day relocate to Mars.

Reflecting on her results and Oxford offer, Arina said:

I feel very happy with my results, as despite having very high predicted grades, I was doubting until the very last moment my ability to achieve them.

My main reason for wanting to study at Oxford was always the wonderful community of people as well as its highly regarded status as a research centre. The application process was not easy as I had to balance both my mock exams and the interview preparation, but the struggle was worth it.

I am very excited but also slightly nervous about my future at Oxford University. It will be a big change, but I am ready to make the most of the opportunities that will be open to me.

The College would like to congratulate Arina on this remarkable achievement and wish her every success as she prepares for the next stage of her academic journey.
