Introduction

This policy statement sets out the school's arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider's education or training offer. this complies with the school's legal obligation under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Pupil Entitlement

Garth Hill College recognises that all pupils in years 7-13 are entitled:

  • to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships oppor- tunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
  • to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, in- cluding technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events; and
  • to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.
    • For students of compulsory school age these encounters are mandatory and there will be a minimum of two encounters during Year 8/9, two more encounters during Year 10/11. Year 12/13 who have not decided on their next steps will be provided with two more optional provider encounters. All encounters will be scheduled to take place to meet the mandatory dates.
    • These provider encounters will be scheduled during main school hours and the provider will be given a reasonable amount of time to, as a minimum:
      • Share information about both the provider and the approved technical education qualification and apprenticeships that the provider offers
      • Explain what careers routes those options could lead to
      • Provide insights into what it might be like to learn or train with that provider
      • Answer questions from students

Opportunities for access

A number of events integrated into the school careers programme will offer providers of education or training an opportunity to come into school to speak to students and/or their parents/carers. Providers should speak to the contact named above to identify the most suitable opportunity for access to Garth Hill College students.

Premises and facilities

The school will aim to make suitable facilities available for discussions between the provider and students, as appropriate to the activity and subject to the school's own calendar of events. The school will also make available AV and the other specialist equipment to support provider presentations. This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit with the Careers Lead

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature with the Careers Co-Ordinator. This information will be available to students at lunch and break times in either the designated space on main site and/or in the sixth form centre.

Feedback & Evaluation

We welcome all feedback that will positively influence and shape the careers programme from students, parents and employers.
