BTEC Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism

Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism

BTEC Travel and Tourism (Level 3) is a vocational course that is equivalent to one A-Level and gives equivalent UCAS points if you are considering applying for university. It provides students with skills and theoretical knowledge in the different sectors of the Travel and Tourism Industry. Students study four units across the two years (two in each year). Students study Units 1 and 3 in Year 12, and Unit 2 and the optional unit in Year 13. Units 1 and 2 are externally assessed (through an exam) and Unit 3 and the optional unit are internally assessed (through coursework).

Unit 1: The world of Travel and Tourism (90 Guided Learning Hours)

  • Types of Travel and Tourism
  • The types of travel and tourism organisations, their roles and the products and services they offer to customers.
  • The scale of the Travel and Tourism Industry
  • Factors affecting the Travel and Tourism industry

Unit 2: Global Destinations (120 Guided Learning Hours)

  • Geographical awareness, locations and features giving appeal to global destinations.
  • Potential advantages and disadvantages of travel options to access global destinations
  • Travel planning, itineraries, costs and suitability matched to customer needs
  • Consumer trends, motivating and enabling factors and their potential effect on the popularity and appeal of global destinations

Unit 3: Principals of Marketing in Travel and Tourism (90 Guided Learning Hours)

  • The importance of focusing on meeting customer needs to the success of marketing activitiesin travel and tourism organisations
  • The impact that marketing activities have on the success of different travel and tourismorganisations
  • Marketing plans and data research
  • How marketing plans meet industry and customer needs

Optional Unit - Unit 9: Visitor Attractions (60 Guided Learning Hours)

  • The nature, role and appeal of visitor attractions
  • How visitor attractions meet the diverse expectations of visitors
  • How visitor attractions respond to competition and measure their success and appeal

Where can BTEC Travel and Tourism take me?

Studying travel and tourism can lead you into lots of different jobs within the travel and tourism industry e.g. within transport, accommodation and attractions. The skills learnt throughout this course are also valuable to a wide variety of careers outside this industry, for example in marketing, PR and product development.
