BTEC Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care

Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care

BTEC Health and Social Care is a vocational course that is equivalent to one A-Level and givesequivalent UCAS points if you are considering applying for university. It provides students both with practical skills and theoretical knowledge in a variety of areas. Students study four units across the two years (two in each year). Students study Units 1 and 5 in Year 12, and Unit 2 and the optional unit (Unit 11) in Year 13. Units 1 and 2 are externally assessed (through an exam) and Unit 5 andUnit 11 are internally assessed (through coursework).

  • Attachment theories and effects of ageing

Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care

  • Key roles in healthcare
  • Responsibilities in healthcare
  • Ensuring safety in Care

Unit 5: Meeting Individual care and needs

  • Promoting equality and diversity
  • Preventing Discrimination
  • Ethical issues and approaches

Optional Unit - Unit 11: Psychological Perspectives

  • Understanding human development and behaviour
  • Management and treatment disorders
  • Anxiety, stress and depression

What do I need to study BTEC Health and Social Care?

We recommend the following:

  • A pass in GCSE English and Maths

What could this qualification lead to?

The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses. It can be takenalongside, for example:

  • A Levels in Biology and Psychology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Nursing
  • A Levels in English and History, which could lead to a BA (Hons) in Primary Education
  • BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Social Work
  • BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport, which could lead to a Foundation Degree in Sports Studies and Development. Learners should always check the entry requirements fordegree programmes with specific higher education providers.
