About GH6
We are fortunate to be studying in a building dedicated to post-16 studies. Our Sixth Form Centre successfully combines social and learning spaces. The centre boasts four laboratories, three ICT suites, three fully equipped Design Technology workshops and multiple seminar rooms. There is also a cafeteria. The building provides our students with a corporate, university style environment within which to learn, achieve and enjoy this important stage of education.
Teachers have high expectations of students. They carefully plan activities that encourage students to work with each other and independently. Consequently, students make strong progress.

The Learning Experience
Garth Hill College’s Sixth Form is growing. Many of our year 11 students choose to stay with us as they graduate to the next stage of their education. Our students tell us that they are looking for an adult orientated, high quality learning experience combined with the care and nurture that they have enjoyed throughout their time in the main college. We are committed to providing an excellent learning experience for the young people in our care.
Students’ outcomes are good. Historically, students make strong progress across their chosen subjects at A level. Current students also make good progress because of effective teaching and high-quality pastoral support.

Applicants to the Sixth Form will benefit from bespoke advice and guidance when choosing from the extensive curriculum choice on offer. It is imperative that individual strengths, learning preferences and future plans are fully considered when enrolling onto Level Three courses. The Sixth Form Leadership Team and personal tutors prioritise getting to know all of the students joining the Sixth Form and we pride ourselves on the care, support and service available to all. Your personal tutor will coach and mentor you throughout your time at Garth Hill Sixth Form, supporting you pastorally and academically. Your personal tutor will help you to set targets and goals and will review and report on your progress.
Teaching and Learning
Students in year 12 and year 13 are taught by our most experienced staff. Standards and expectations of both staff and students are high and we monitor and review teaching and learning very closely. The Sixth Form has a track record of very good examination results and we are renowned for celebrating the success of our students.
Progress and achievement is tracked at regular intervals throughout the academic year by subject staff and tutors. When necessary, intervention is put in place swiftly, tailored to the student to ensure that they catch up and keep up with their studies. The transition from GCSE to A level can be very challenging. Our pastoral team will guide and support you so that you can flourish.
Personal Growth
Academic success is a priority, but we are acutely aware that personal growth is also vital at this stage of a young adult’s life. We offer a wide range of opportunities to help you develop as a confident and independent learner, as well as gain important life skills.
There is an extensive enrichment programme and all students are required to get involved and participate. We want all of our students be inspired, motivated and encouraged throughout their studies. You will also follow a diverse and enriching PSHE programme through a dedicated lesson each week.
Student Voice and Student Leadership
All students are encouraged to belong to the Student Leadership Team. Annually, we appoint a Head Boy and a Head Girl who lead the Student Leadership Team and represent the pupil and student body across the College. They lead community initiatives, organise fund raising and have a strong voice and influence around the College. They also take a lead with Sixth Form social life. Social events across the year are enjoyed by all students in the Sixth Form. It is probably best that you ask for further details about the social life from the students themselves when you come to visit!
