'A' Level English Literature

The AS and A Level English Literature qualifications encourage students to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies. They apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation to engage critically and creatively with both set texts and others of their own choosing.

Unit Details Year 12:

  • Component 1: Shakespeare and Poetry pre-1900 (H072/01)
    • 1 x 1 hour 30 minute exam (closed book).
    • Reading: Shakespeare’s Hamlet and a collection of poetry by Christina Rossetti.
  • Component 2: Drama and prose post-1900 (H072/02)
    • 1 x 1 hour 45 minute exam (closed book).
    • Reading: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire.

Unit Details Year 13:

  • Component 1: Shakespeare and Poetry pre-1900 (H472/01)
    • 1 x 2 hour 30 minute exam (closed book).
    • Reading: Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, and a collection of poetry by Christina Rossetti.
  • Component 2: Comparative and contextual study (H472/02)
    • 1 x 2 hour 30 minute exam (closed book).
    • Reading: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms.
  • Component 3: Literature post-1900 (H472/03)
    • Task 1: 1000 word essay based on one poem from a collection of poetry by Sylvia Plath.
    • Task 2: 2000 word essay based on a comparison of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and Toni Morrison’s Home.

What do I need to study English Literature at GH6?

It is recommended that you have a Grade 6 in English Literature and Language.
